Starting and running the program

Overview

TMS Backup can be started and run using several options. Which option used will greatly depend on:

  • Type of permission required to access and backup or restore current user's (and other) data;
  • Program configuration profiles and their management.

Running with standard user privileges:

- [1] Normal start / run (Default)

Description:

Select 'TMS Backup - START' from the Windows start menu in order to start and run the program with 'standard user' privileges. This is the default process if only user related data and files need to be backed up. For elevated privileges see section [2] and [3].

Details:

User program profile

Any Windows user starting the program through the Windows start menu 'TMS Backup - START' will have access to a personal program profile specific to that 'logged in Windows user' account. This program profile will hold all the program and backup configurations. It does not interfere with other Windows users who are using different accounts.

If a user is a member of the 'administrator group'

The program will always start with 'standard user' privileges EVEN if the 'logged in Windows user' is a member of the 'Windows administrator group'. See section [2] and [3] on how to elevate.

User - Drive, folder and file access

Access permissions are as set by the system and system admin for a particular user.

  • Permitted are normally the user's home directory and all files and folders owned by the user, public folders and other sections set by the system admin.
  • Restricted are normally other user's home directories and sections restricted by the system and/or system admin.

Backup / Restore section specifics:

'Run as different user'- Backup/Restore section specifics

  • Current user (default)
In the backup/restore configuration of each section, the 'current user' will have STANDARD privileges by default. The elevation state 'not elevated' will be displayed alongside the user name.
  • 'Run as different user' (optional)
TMS Backup allows for specific backup/restore sections to be configured so that they can be run using different user credentials. This can be set differently for each section. User name and password will be required.

However, ANY 'different' user selected under this option will run with 'lower' (standard) user privileges. This also applies if users are selected who are actually 'members of the administrator group'.

Running with administrator privileges:

- [2] Elevated start / run using 'TMS Backup - ELEVATE' (Advanced)

Description:

Select 'TMS Backup - ELEVATE' from the Windows start menu in order to start and run the program 'elevated', which means with full administrator and access privileges. The Windows UAC (User Account Control) will prompt for the Windows administrator password on program start unless this option was set differently in Windows User Account Control settings (e.g. by the system admin).

Details:

User program profile

All program specific information is saved in a user specific profile. If elevated, this would automatically change to the one of the elevated (Windows administrator) user. However, 'TMS Backup - ELEVATE' provides an additional program specific functionality which allows for the seamless and continued use of the same 'logged in user' - program profile, even if it is currently running elevated and hence as a different administrator user. This allows the user to run the program 'normal' or 'elevated' without the need of maintaining two complete separate program profiles! See section [3] if this is not required.

If a user is a member of the 'administrator group'

Even if the user has logged in with an administrator account, it is still required to use 'TMS Backup - ELEVATE' in order to elevate the program so it can be run with full administrator privileges.

User - Drive, folder and file access

If run elevated e.g. by using 'TMS Backup - ELEVATE', all drives, folders and files are accessible with administrator account permissions. This also includes all home directories of the various local users.

Backup / Restore section specifics:

'Run as different user'- Backup/Restore section specifics

  • Current user (default)
In the backup/restore configuration of each section, the 'current user' will have elevated privileges by default! The elevation state will be displayed alongside the user name as 'Elevated'.
  • 'Run as different user' (optional)
TMS Backup allows for specific backup/restore sections to be configured so that they can be run using different user credentials. However, ANY 'different' user selected under this option will run with 'lower' (standard) user privileges. This also applies, if the same 'run-as user name' is selected as the currently set 'default' user or is a 'members of the administrator group'!

- [3] 'Run as administrator' using Windows built in (Advanced)

Description:

TMS Backup can also be started using the following general Windows elevation procedure. The program will run with full administrator privileges. Alternatively 'TMS Backup - ELEVATE' may be used - see [2].

Details:

Start example

  • Open 'Windows start menu'
  • Navigate to 'TMS Stein's Backup (Pro)' start menu entry
  • 'Right mouse click' on 'TMS Backup - START'
  • Select 'More'
  • Select 'Run as administrator'
  • Enter administrator password (UAC)

User program profile

All program specific information is saved in a user specific profile. If the program is elevated (as described above), this automatically changes to a DIFFERENT user profile namely the one of the Windows administrator. If logged in as the Windows administrator, this could be the same profile.

If a user is a member of the 'administrator group'

Even if the user has logged in with an administrator account, it is still required to elevate as described or to use 'TMS Backup - ELEVATE' in order to elevate the program so it can be run with full administrator privileges.

User - Drive, folder and file access

If run elevated, all drives, folders and files are accessible with administrator account permissions. This also includes all home directories of the various local users.
